Bundle up, because the weather is not pulling any punches today. A cold air mass is still gripping the area, making for a Tuesday that is officially classified as "very cold." However, change is already brewing in the atmosphere, with thin dust expected to drift in tomorrow and a low-pressure system lining up for the second half of the week.
Today is a day for sunglasses and thick scarves. The skies will be mainly clear, offering plenty of winter sunshine, though occasional clouds will drift through. Don't let the sun deceive you, though. the temperatures are biting. We are looking at highs of just 11°C inland and 13°C along the coasts. In the highest mountainous areas, the thermometer will struggle to even reach zero, topping out at around -1°C. Frost will be a persistent feature in the mountains, so drive carefully if you are heading up.
The winds will maintain a northerly to northeasterly direction, blowing light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort), but brace for stronger gusts (4 to 5 Beaufort) on windward coasts this afternoon.
Tonight, the cold remains the main story. Skies will stay mainly clear with some local cloud cover. The winds will shift slightly to northeasterly/southeasterly and pick up speed along the coast, reaching a strong 4 to 5 Beaufort, kicking up the sea to rough conditions locally.
The outlook:
The weather pattern is about to get busier.
Wednesday (tomorrow): The deep freeze begins to ease, but the atmosphere gets hazier. Expect mid- and high-level clouds and the arrival of thin dust. There is also a chance of isolated showers to break the dry spell.
Thursday & Friday: A low-pressure system moves in, bringing a more significant shift. Conditions will turn mainly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms on the menu for both days.
Good news, though. Temperatures will gradually rise through Thursday, finally bringing us back close to seasonal averages by the end of the week.
Snow update: For winter sports enthusiasts, the snow depth at Chionistra remains steady at 21 centimeters.
